Handheld Multifunctional Fluorescence Imager for Non-invasive Plant Phenotyping

Abstract: Fluorescence imaging has shown great potential in non-invasive plant monitoring and analysis. However, current systems have several limitations, such as bulky size, high cost, contact measurement, and lack of multifunctionality, which may hinder its applications in a wide range of settings including indoor vertical farming. Herein, we developed a compact handheld fluorescence imager enabling multipurpose plant phenotyping, such as continuous photosynthetic activity monitoring and non-destructive anthocyanin qu… Show more

“…Single-color LEDs are also relatively inexpensive, consume less power, and have a long lifetime. The LEDs can be arranged in an array (11,13,47,48) or in single source configurations (10,40,49) based upon the measurements that are desired. If absorption measurements are needed the sample needs to be placed between the excitation source and the camera, while fluorescence emission measurements require the LEDs and camera to be on the same side of the object being imaged.…”

“…Fluorescence imaging can be used to measure several parameters related to plant physiology such as environmental stress, photosynthetic efficiency, nutrient deficiency, and disease (40)(41)(42)(43). By measuring these parameters, researchers and agriculturists can gain insights into the health and performance of the plant under different environmental conditions where early detection of diseases and pests can save crops and improve yield.…”
