Hand Tumors

Abstract: Hand tumors of the skin and soft tissue are frequently encountered by plastic surgeons. Although similar to lesions affecting other parts of the body, the presentation, workup, and treatment options often differ in the hand secondary to its complex anatomy and functional significance. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of those lesions that commonly arise in the hand-including epidermal inclusion cysts, ganglion cysts, and glomus tumors-in addition to tumors such as soft-tissue sarcomas that… Show more

“…In all of these patients pathological examination revealed lymph node metastasis. Alternatively, high-risk lesions may benefit from sentinel lymph node biopsy for the diagnosis of subclinical lymph node metastasis (9). In a previous study, lesions smaller than 2 cm had a local recurrence rate of 7.4% and a metastasis rate of 9.1% while tumors larger than 2 cm in diameter had a local recurrence rate of 15.2% and a metastasis rate of 30.3% (11).…”

“…Tumors of the hand are mostly benign painless lesions. Enchondromas are the most common primary bone tumors of the hand, comprising up to 70–90% of cases [1, 2]. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are commonly found in long bones [3].…”

“…Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are commonly found in long bones [3]. Atypical presentation in hand may mimic other bone lesions of the hand like enchondroma [1]. Other bone tumors and tumor-like lesions in the hand include simple bone cyst (SBC), giant cell tumor (GCT), fibrous tumors, and vascular tumors [2].…”

“…[2][3][4] Chronic sun exposure predisposes the back of the hands to developing SCC. 5 Historical factors such as occupations or lifestyles with significant sun exposure should also raise clinical suspicion when examining cutaneous lesions. Some examples of higher-risk occupations include lifeguards, landscapers, construction workers, and airplane pilots.…”

“…for high risk SCC. 5 In the case of highrisk patients, various amputations may be the best options and should be considered early. In this paper, we present a unique case of recurrent infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma of the hand requiring multiple resections.…”
