Hand function and self‐care in children with cerebral palsy

Abstract: To examine the relationship between self-care and bimanual performance in children aged 8 to 12 years with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD This was a cross-sectional study of 74 children with CP (unilateral n=30, bilateral n=44; 48 males, 26 females; median age 9y 8mo [25th, 75th centiles 9y 1mo, 10y 8mo], Manual Abilities Classification System level I=30, II=28, III=16). Self-care was measured using the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT), and bimanual performance using … Show more

“…As far as the current situation of community rehabilitation in China is concerned, community health service centers or community rehabilitation stations can only provide parents with some guidance on professional skills and the update of the latest theoretical knowledge. However, long-term continuous rehabilitation training still depends more on family rehabilitation [ 37 ].…”

“…18 Although self-care skills are related to manual abilities, they are also dependent on other constructs, such as gross motor function and cognition. 1,19 Thus, self-care skills represent a broad construct, conceptualized in the ICF activities and participation domain. 18 The PEDI is recommended to assess self-care skills in children of elementary school age or younger and may therefore be used to explore the divergent validity of the BoHA.…”

“…In the former study, the newly developed computer adaptive test version of the PEDI, validated from birth up to 20 years, was used. 19 A Norwegian version of the computer adaptive test version of the PEDI was not available when the current study was performed. Thus, to confirm our results, future studies should investigate the correlation between the BoHA and self-care skills using the computer adaptive test version of the PEDI and include children from 18 months to 12 years of age.…”

“…They use the graphical representation of causal effects provided by directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to lay out their assumptions on the effects between self‐care, bimanual performance, and all further relevant variables. This requires clinical expert knowledge, which the authors support by references, in order to identify all relevant variables and their relations 5 . Constructing such a DAG is very helpful and strongly recommended for every empirical study.…”
