“…In fact, oral bacteria were the major pathogens in 15% of cases of community acquired pneumonia (Yamasaki et al, 2013). The ability of elders to maintain adequate oral health may be reduced by cognitive decline, reduced hand function (Padilha et al, 2007), sarcopenia (Walls, 2014), and loss of autonomy. Since poor oral health may exert a negative impact on the general health of the elderly and increase the cost of their care, effective methods that improve the oral health of elders is warranted.…”

“…Effective biofilm removal requires a degree of manual dexterity that is often lacking, especially among elderly patients 16,30 . The use of chemical denture cleaners can produce more effective results, especially in geriatric patients and in people who have problems with wearing dentures 29 . Chemical denture cleaners are classified into various groups such as alkaline peroxides, alkaline hypochlorite, acids, disinfectants, and enzymes 10,17 .…”

“…The magnitude of the association between dental plaque and the outcome was not importantly changed when adjustment for depressive symptoms was carried out in the multivariate analysis. Thus, other factors not evaluated in the present study such as sugar intake, exposure to diverse forms of fluoride [Yeung, 2007] and the ability to perform oral hygiene self-care [Padilha et al, 2007] may be acting as determinants of elevated plaque levels, which is intimately related with increased tooth demineralization.…”
