Hand-Based Disocclusion for the World-in-Miniature Metaphor

Abstract: The world-in-miniature metaphor (WIM) allows users to select, manipulate, and navigate efficiently in virtual environments. In addition to the first-person perspective offered by typical virtual reality (VR) applications, the WIM offers a second dynamic viewpoint through a hand-held miniature copy of the environment. In this paper we explore different strategies to allow the user to interact with the miniature replica at multiple levels of scale. Unlike competing approaches, we support complex indoor environme… Show more

“…An alternative solution is the World-in-Miniature metaphor [86], which provides the user with an additional viewport displaying the virtual environment from a third-person perspective. In order to afford for direct manipulation, the content displayed in the WIM can be manually adjusted to contain only a portion of the VE [103] or automatically adjust the content removing potential occluders [3] (see Figure 15).…”

“…WIM enhanced with cut-aways[3]. The miniature replica provides a cut-away view of a part of the model according to the viewing direction and the user's hand position inside the WIM (shown as a red sphere).…”

“…The open-ended comments indicate that using WIM as the assisted view has advantages in the controlling flexibility as stated in the previous Fig. 5: Assembly case of tightening a pair of bolt and nut on fuselage belly works [31,44,2]. However, several drawbacks were exposed in the open-ended comments, such as controlling the WIM could raise accidental collision, and the over-rich information.…”

“…Pausch et al, [31] indicated that WIM is similar to a cube map, which can provide users with a manipulable global view in original 1PP. Andujar et al, [2,44] referred that users can observe and select occluded objects in original 1PP by rotating WIM, which solves the problem of relying on navigation to select occluded objects to some extent. Evin et al [14] used a WIM model orbiting around the user to reduce the cybersickness in viewpoint movement, while maintaining the natural interaction.…”
