Hand anthropometric study in northern Colombia

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to gather information about the dimensions of the northern Colombian (Caribbean region) population, focusing on the dimensions of the hand and comparing them with measurements from other regions. Thirty-two hand dimensions were chosen and 120 males and 86 females were measured. Results indicated that there were differences between the dimensions of the hand for men and women, showing that men are larger. Also, there was a comparison made between some measurements of other stud… Show more

“…In a previous study on Iranian male workers, the hand length was obtained 193.01 mm, which was smaller than the hands of car mechanics and farmers of this study (Mirmohammadi et al, 2016). To investigate the possible differences in hand dimensions between the current study and previously published data, hand data from previous studies involving subjects from North Colombia (Oviedo‐Trespalacios et al, 2017), Korea (Jee & Yun, 2016), Turkey (Cakit et al, 2014), Nigeria (Obi, 2016), Bangladeshis in the USA (Imrhan et al, 2009), Jordan (Mandahawi et al, 2008), Vietnam (Imrhan et al, 1993), and central Iran (Mirmohammadi et al, 2016) were obtained. The mean of hand dimensions and the result of comparisons (Cohen's effect size) are summarized in Table 5.…”

“…As a result, a larger sample size study including individuals from various regions of Iran is advised. Second, the hand circumferences were measured with a fabric tape, as in earlier investigations (García‐Cáceres et al, 2012; Jee & Yun, 2016; Oviedo‐Trespalacios et al, 2017). Using a finger circumference gauge to avoid measuring errors in hand circumferences is recommended.…”

“…Various methods of 3D imaging have been extensively applied in oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as plastic surgery 8 11 , because they collect surface data rapidly, non-invasively, accurately, reliably, and cost-effectively. These methods allow for the development of equally accurate 3D models by means of direct anthropometry, which is considered as the “gold standard” 12 , 13 .…”

“…Most of these studies have focused solely on general body dimensions and include few measurements of the hand. Exceptions have been the studies conducted by García-Cáceres and colleagues [7], which focused on the anthropometry of flower-sector workers and were oriented toward the design and evaluation of hand tools, and the hand anthropometrics study in northern Colombia by Oviedo-Trespalacios and colleagues [12].…”
