Halomonas maura sp. nov., a novel moderately halophilic, exopolysaccharide-producing bacterium.

Abstract: Four moderately halophilic, exopolysaccharide-producing bacterial strains isolated from soil samples collected from a saltern at Asilah (Morocco) are reported. These four strains were initially considered to belong to the genus Halomonas. Their DNA GMC contents varied between 622 and 641 mol %. DNA-DNA hybridization revealed a considerable degree of DNA-DNA similarity amongst all four strains (755-808 %). Nevertheless, similarity with the reference strains of phylogenetically close relatives was lower than 40 … Show more

“…The fatty acid profile of strain SS20 T was characterized as containing saturated and unsaturated straight-fatty acids such as C 18 : 1 v7c, C 19 : 0 v8c cyclo and C 16 : 0 (Table 2). The fatty acid composition on MA was slightly different from that on MA supplemented with 5 % NaCl (w/v), as reported previously (Arahal et al, 2001;Bouchotroch et al, 2001;Franzmann & Tindall, 1990;Valderrama et al, 1998;Yoon et al, 2001Yoon et al, , 2002). However, the major fatty acid profile of strain SS20 T was similar to those of other members of the genus Halomonas, but was distinguishable from that of the genus Zymobacter, the closest phylogenetic neighbour Table 1.…”

“…As a result of an on-going extensive ecological and taxonomic study in different hypersaline environments in Spain, Chile and Morocco (Amjres et al, 2011;Bouchotroch et al, 2001;González-Domenech et al, 2008a, 2008b, 2009Llamas et al, 2011;Martínez-Cánovas et al, 2004a, 2004b Valderrama et al, 1991) our research group had, at the time of writing, described 12 novel species of the genus Halomonas. Furthering our research into this subject we studied a novel strain, RS-16 T , determined its taxonomic position and propose it as a novel species of the genus Halomonas.…”

“…The 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR with the forward primer 16F27 (59-AGAGTTTGATCMTGGCTCAG-39) and the reverse primer 16R1488 (59-CGGTTACCTTGTTAGG ACTTCACC-39), and the resulting PCR product was then cloned into pGEM-T cloning vector (Promega) as described elsewhere (Bouchotroch et al, 2001;Amjres et al, 2011). The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain was obtained and used for phylogenetic analysis and for initial BLAST searches in the GenBank database, comparing the sequence to reference 16S rRNA gene sequences.…”
