Halo dermatitis around a melanocytic naevus: Meyerson's naevus

Abstract: A case of halo dermatitis (eczema) around a pigmented naevus is reported. This appears to be a not uncommon condition which is not described in major dermatology textbooks. The relevant literature is reviewed, and the eponym 'Meyerson's naevus' is suggested.

“…On the other hand, other authors support the idea that they are different processes [5, 6]because the clinical, histological and evolutional data of both entities are very different [5]. The clinical findings which suggest that they are separate processes are that the eczematous halo does not show depigmentation and is pruriginous [1, 6]. The histology favours the latter hypothesis: the eczematous halo does not show the regression changes which are characteristic of the halo naevus [5].…”

“…Unlike the more frequently observed halo nevus or nevus Sutton, the nevus remains unchanged after the inflammatory process has disappeared. In 1988, Nicholls and Mason [5]proposed the eponym ‘Meyerson’s nevus’. Since then, this, also called ‘Meyerson phenomenon’ [6], has rarely been seen in relation with other skin tumors [7, 8].…”

“…In Meyerson’s nevus, epidermal spongiosis is responsible for the clinical appearance of the erythematous, vesicular and scaling peripheral ring which may be pruritic [10]. This change may involve 1 or more nevi simultaneously, and it is more often seen in young adults.…”
