Hall-Effect Current Sensors Susceptibility to EMI: Experimental Study

Abstract: The paper deals with the susceptibility to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) of Hall-effect current sensors. They are usually employed in power systems because of their galvanic isolation. The EMI robustness of such contactless device was compared with that of resistive current sensing (wired method). To this purpose, a printed circuit board (PCB) was fabricated. EMI tests methods such as Bulk Current Injection (BCI), Transverse-Electromagnetic (TEM) cell and Direct Power injection (DPI) were performed to eva… Show more

“…Finally, the Hall effect sensors were assessed. While these sensors are often used as current sensors [ 10 ], using them in conjunction with permanent magnets allows them to be used as displacement sensors. Hall effect sensors are available in small, Integrated Circuit (IC) based formats and can be easily installed within a brick, with magnets of appropriate strength mounted in the opposing brick.…”

“…The understanding of sensor fault types is studied in aerospace applications and large scale wind turbine bearings [4], [5]. The susceptibility of Halleffect current sensors to EMI is analyzed in [6] using the bulk current injection, transverse electromagnetic cell, and direct power injection methods in an experimental setup. Although this approach is effective, it does not take fully into account the peripheral components, the driving circuits, and the amplifying stages of a voltage or current sensor.…”

“…Contactless current sensors such as Hall-type current sensors are composed of integrated circuits, so EMI countermeasures against radio frequency are required (Refs. [13][14][15][16][17]). In addition, as well as Hall-type current sensors, research using a current transformer (CT) or shunt to measure current accurately at low cost is one example of design [18][19][20][21][22].…”
