With the introduction of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in several sectors, wireless, reliable, and energy-saving communication in distributed sensor networks are more important than ever. Thereby, wake-up technologies are becoming increasingly important as they significantly contribute to reducing the energy consumption of wireless sensor nodes. In an indoor environment, the use of wireless sensors, in general, is more challenging due to signal fading and reflections and needs, therefore, to be critically investigated. This paper discusses the performance analysis of wake-up receiver (WuRx) architectures based on two low frequency (LF) amplifier approaches with regard to sensitivity, power consumption, and package error rate (PER). Factors that affect systems were compared and analyzed by analytical modeling, simulation results, and experimental studies with both architectures. The developed WuRx operates in the 868 MHz band using on-off-keying (OOK) signals while supporting address detection to wake up only the targeted network node. By using an indoor setup, the signal strength and PER of received signal strength indicator (RSSI) in different rooms and distances were determined to build a wireless sensor network. The results show a wake-up packets (WuPts) detection probability of about 90% for an interior distance of up to 34 m.

An optoelectronic logical gate NAND composed of thin film photoconductive (PC) and electroluminescent (EL) elements. In the system was supplied with sinusoidal voltage with equal values of amplitude and frequency. The input signals were two rectangular light pulses, illuminating the respective photoconductive elements, and the output signal was the luminance of the electroluminescent cell. The process of natural aging, which caused changes in parameters of PC elements, influenced also the changes in characteristics of the system composed of these elements. For EL element subjected to aging in normal conditions without applied voltage, the luminance of the light was lower by about 20% than for element immediately after their preparation. A variation of the parameters of PC and EL elements by the aging process caused then a decrease of the signal on the output of NAND gate and also an increase in the lag of the output signal in relation to the input signal.

This paper presents the application of genetic algorithms to the design of analog IIR filters with variable time delays -specific examples for tunable optically controlled microwave signal processors. In addition to the IIR filter coefficients as the standard design parameters, the time delays can be optimized, Because of physical constraints, specific restrictions of the design parameters, however, have to be obeyed. In order to make use of the additional freedom of variable time delays and to fulfill the design restrictions, non-standard design procedures are needed. To this end, the applicability of several variants of genetic algorithms to analog IIR filter design is studied. Experimental results and a comparison to standard design techniques are given that demonstrate the excellent properties of the genetic design methodology.
