Hair Transplantation: Management of Donor Area

Abstract: Notably improved postharvesting donor sites are most likely to result when measures are taken to ensure minimal trauma by taking definitive steps to combat tension in the tissues. Modest undermining combined with deep plane fixation facilitates channeling of tension vector forces from at-risk superficial tissues into nonundermined tissues and deep tissues, each of which is optimally equipped to withstand the adverse consequences of tension.

“…14 Unsightly scars and stretch-atrophied donor tissue are also still one of the major concerns of the stripharvesting technique. 17 FUE prevents most of the donor-site complications of strip harvesting. A localized infection of the donor site that healed with topical antibiotic treatment was the only major complication that we had seen in our patients.…”

“…Because of reduced tension closure, postoperative pain is significantly reduced. Criteria for DPF 14 are as follows: (1) modest undermining only, (2) minimal or no tension transmission in undermined tissue, (3) tension channeled into deep and/or nonundermined tissue, and (4) DPF sutures, for example, 2/0 nylon, placed under moderate tension.…”

“…FUT was done by taking a strip from occiput in a trapezoid fashion[3] after assessment of scalp laxity. The wound was closed with 3-0 polyglactin 910 (vicryl rapide) suture material using continuous non-trichophytic, single trichophytic and double trichophytic closure techniques[4] [Figure 1].…”
