To characterise mercury (Hg) exposure in Daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentonii, Kuhl 1817) in southern Sweden, 17 specimens were captured in 2013 and back fur samples were taken for analysis to determine Hg concentrations. The fur Hg levels determined [1.15 ± 0.27 (mean ± standard deviation, n = 17) µg Hg g−1 fresh weight (fw)] represent a baseline for comparison in future assessments of Hg exposure in bat populations in northern Europe. Mercury concentrations were close to those reported in fur from other bat species, but were lower than proposed toxicological thresholds in bats (> 30 µg Hg g−1 fw) and mice (5 µg Hg g−1 fw). This is the first study to examine Hg exposure in bats in Scandinavia.

Сучасні зміни клімату та погіршення стану довкілля набули планетарного масштабу. Вплив цих чинників на складні біологічні системи необхідно відстежувати за допомогою біоіндикаторних таксонів, до яких належать і кажани. Оцінено значний біоіндикаційний потенціал кажанів, передумовами якого є їхнє значне поширення у світі, висока спеціалізація, доступність дослідження популяційних тенденцій та ефектів коротко- і довготривалих впливів і ефективне використання якого можна реалізувати через формування глобальної мережі моніторингу популяцій кажанів. Чисельність популяцій кажанів у світі скорочується через негативний вплив цілої низки чинників, зокрема важких металів. Встановлено вміст важких металів (Плюмбуму, Хрому, Цинку та Купруму) та охарактеризовано закономірності їх кількісної представленості у шерсті п'яти видів рукокрилих: пергача пізнього Eptesicus serotinus, нічниці водяної Myotis daubentonii, вуханя звичайного Plecotus auritus, нетопирів білосмугого (середземноморського) Pipistrellus kuhlii та лісового Pipistrellus nathusii на природоохоронних та урбанізованих територіях заходу України. Оцінено важливість використання кажанів як біологічних індикаторів забруднення важкими металами та вказано на доцільність використання у моніторингових екологічних дослідженнях рукокрилих методу визначення вмісту важких металів у шерсті як неінвазивного та високоінформативного.

Scolytinae (bark beetle) is one of the most detrimental pests on the Chongming Island. It is desirable to understand the behaviour of the Scolytinae throughout its life cycle. Behaviour studies regarding mass attacks, mating behaviour and chemical control have been frequently reported in literature. However, little research could be found regarding the life of Scolytinae in the larval stage, especially for beetles in the field. In this paper, we analyse the tunnel map beneath the tree bark, since it is a potential source of information on the population size, egg gallery and larval development. We propose four hypotheses including synchronous larval growth (SLG), outward normal direction (OND), communication and repulsion (CR) and individual differences(ID), then employ the methods of curve fitting and differential equation modelling to mathematically reconstruct the tunnel map. Furthermore, we introduce the Frechet distance to measure the similarity of curves. Numerical simulation shows that the reconstructed tunnel map closely matches the collected sample.
