Hair resistance to mechanical wear

Abstract: Hair mechanical properties are primary indicators of hair integrity. Here we describe a methodology based on hair's resistance to mechanical wear to evaluate cosmetic treatments. Using a vibrational vortex cycle, we developed a protocol that relies on the plastic deformation and degradation of hair, due to frictional forces between hardened steel balls and hair fragments. We demonstrate that the balls when in contact with the hair fragments promoted extended hair degradation. The degree of degradation was rela… Show more

“…While researchers predominantly investigate the potential for hair regeneration in AGA, there is limited emphasis on hair quality in areas affected by hair loss. Exposure to sunlight can lead to photodegradation of human hair, with hair photoaging characterized by the lifting of hair cuticles [ 24 ], degradation of keratin [ 35 ], disruption of disulfide bonds [ 36 ], depletion of natural oils, loss of shine, heightened frictional resistance, and compromised mechanical properties [ 37 ]. Based on the findings presented in Figure 1 b, it is evident that there was minimal hair damage in the balding region of AGA, characterized by raised scales, suggesting overall surface structural impairment.…”

“…The effect of the formulations on the hair resistance to the mechanical wear was expressed in terms of hairs mass loss after the mechanical insult. 27 To that, 10 mg of each hair sample was cut in 0.5 cm fragments and were incubated with five hardened steel balls and 700 μL of distilled water in 2 mL Eppendorf tubes. The samples were vortexed under 2500 rpm during 12 h, and the reaction mixtures were filtered using a membrane pore size of 5.0 μm.…”

“…A simple cornea model was developed for the tribological assessment of different eye drops [764]. The resistance of hair to mechanical wear was correlated with hair mechanical properties and the effects of cosmetic treatments were evaluated [765]. An in vivo methodology was developed to investigate the tactile friction and sensory properties between human skin and hair, and effects of hair care products/shampoos were evaluated [766].…”
