Hair follicle group and skin follicle population of Australian Merino sheep

Abstract: Skin specimens from 495 Australian Merino ewes were collected from 22 flocks, including 9 parent studs out of the 17 identified in the contemporary population. Flocks from all of the 4 important strains of the Australian Merino are represented. The skin samples were collected by a standard biopsy method devised for the purpose by the authors, and histological sections prepared. The techniques are described and data for the following estimations presented: mean total (np+z) follicle population density; mean pri… Show more

“…Other histological and histochemical techniques used were those described by Lyne and Hollis (1968). Counts of the follicle popUlation density (made on six fields of 1 mm2 in area) were corrected for skin shrinkage as described by Carter and Clarke (1957). Measurements of the interfollicular epidermal thickness were obtained from sections (811-thick) cut at right angles to the skin surface and stained with haematoxylin, eosin, and picric acid (HEP).…”

“…Fleece characteristics are influenced during these periods of foetal development. Although traits such as wool follicle densities are highly heritable (Carter and Clarke, 1957;Jackson et al, 1975;Hancock et al, 1979), the foetal and maternal environments can also contribute to fleece characteristics (Short, 1955;Gregory, 1982).…”
