Hair cortisol measurement in older adults: Influence of demographic and physiological factors and correlation with perceived stress

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate correlation between hair cortisol levels and perceived stress scale (PSS) in addition to a range of demographic and physiological factors in a sample of older adults. ExperimentalHair cortisol concentrations were established from 42 older adults aged between 60 and 80 years old. Age, sex, hair colour, smoking status, employment status, daytime sleeping, medication, waist to hip ratio (WHR) and PSS scores were assessed through a questionnaire. Hair cortisol concentration was asse… Show more

“…The literature search identified 1017 unique citation titles of which a total of 120 studies 5,13,14,16,19,30,33–146 comprising 146 separate cohorts were included (Figure 1). This corresponds to a total of 34,342 included participants of which 15,698 (46%) were sampled from general population‐based studies (Table 1).…”

“…Therefore, it would be interesting to include measurements of cortisol in fathers' hair in subsequent studies. Besides, some authors have detected in older adults that hair cortisol levels are slightly higher in dark brown hair 50 , so it could be worth obtaining this information to know if this phenomenon could occur also in pregnant women.…”

“…Indeed, our subgroup analyses revealed that in studies including older individuals, the connection between HCC and BMI is less pronounced. Another group analyzing HCC in participants aged 60 to 80 years found no significant correlation between hair cortisol and the waist‐hip ratio (70). This suggests that, in the elderly, other factors such as inflammation or body fat distribution may be involved and confound the results.…”
