BackgroundAfter the approval of dutastride for androgenic alopecia (AGA) in 2009, Korean authority required a post-marketing surveillance to obtain further data on its safety profile.ObjectiveThe objective was to monitor adverse events (AEs) of dutasteride 0.5 mg in Korean AGA male patients in a clinical practice environment.MethodsOpen label, multi-center, non-interventional observational study was done from July 2009 to July 2013. AGA subjects (18~41 years of age) with no experience of dutasteride were enrolled. Dosage regimen was recommended according to the prescribing information. The incidences of any AEs, serious adverse events (SAEs), and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were evaluated. Multiple logistic regression method was used to identify risk factors related to ADRs. Effectiveness was generally evaluated by physicians.ResultsDuring study period, 712 subjects were enrolled. The subjects of 29.3±6.0 years old exposed to dutasteride for 204.7±161.5 days. One hundred and ten (15.4%) of subjects reported 138 AEs. Four subjects (0.6%) reported 5 SAEs (right radius fracture, 2 events of chronic follicular tonsillitis, influenza infection, and acute appendicitis). Sixty-six subjects (9.3%) reported 80 ADRs. Most frequent ADRs were libido decreased (9 subjects, 1.3%), dyspepsia (8 subjects, 1.1%), impotence (7 subjects, 1.0%), and fatigue (5 subjects, 0.7%). Other interested ADRs were sexual function abnormality (4 subjects, 0.6%), gynecomastia (2 subjects, 0.3%), and ejaculation disorder (1 subject, 0.1%). Most subjects (78.6%) showed overall improvement after treatment of dutasteride in the effectiveness.ConclusionDutasteride 0.5 mg is to be well-tolerated in 18 to 41 years old AGA patients in a clinical practice environment.

Effect of Scalp-Improvement on Adult Women of Shampoo Containing Extracts of Fermented Conger myriaster Peel

In this study, the effect of a shampoo containing fermented extract of <i>Conger myriaster</i> peel, a specialty of Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on the scalp was evaluated. For this study, a clinical trial was conducted for about 4 weeks from July 12, 2021 to August 9, 2021 with 22 Korean adult women between the ages of 20 and 60, after applying for deliberation of the plan for human subject research to the Institutional Bioethics Committee of the OATC Skin Clinical Trial Center and receiving approval (2018071702-2107-HR-129-01) from the Institutional Bioethics Committee on July 20, 2021. The results of this study are as follows. The compliance with the research product was 99.35%, and there was significant decrease in scalp sebum, dead skin cells, and scalp soothing effects was noted after using the research product for 4 weeks. Therefore, it was judged that the value of the local specialties could be increased through various clinical trials using local specialties and that it would be possible to utilize regional specialties for product development. Development of a such product can have a positive effect on increasing income of farming households that produce local specialties, and consumers have opportunities to use cosmetics containing effective ingredients from local specialties. In addition, it is believed that it will be able to vitalize the local economy of rural areas.

Background The hair growth cycle consists of the anagen, catagen, and telogen phases, and hair follicle dermal papilla (HDP) cells of human hair play a role in the initiation and maintenance of the anagen phase. Reduction in HDP cells contributes to hair loss; however, the limited treatment options are associated with negative side effects. Therefore, a naturally derived substance with hair loss‐preventing properties is needed. Aim We investigated the hair growth‐stimulating activities of Plantago asiatica L. extract (PAE) and its molecular mechanism in HDP cells. Methods Cell proliferation was determined using a 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyl tetrazolium bromide solution. Relative mRNA and protein expression levels of hair growth factors were determined using quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. Additionally, a tube formation assay was performed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Results Plantago asiatica L. extract significantly increased the cell proliferation and expression of hair growth factors, including keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) and MYC, in HDP cells. Moreover, PAE led to the accumulation of β‐catenin by promoting the phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase‐3 beta (GSK‐3β) at Ser9 and cAMP response element‐binding protein (CREB) at Ser133 via phosphorylation of extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) (Thr202/Tyr204). PAE also increased tube formation in HUVECs, which promoted angiogenesis for the anagen phase. Conclusions Plantago asiatica L. extract amplified tube formation and production of growth factors (KGF, VEGF) via the activation of GSK‐3β/β‐catenin and mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK)/CREB signaling pathways, demonstrating its potential to safely promote hair growth by inducing the anagen phase.
