Hair and bone as predictors of tissular mercury concentration in the Western Alaska Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes

Abstract: We evaluated if total mercury (THg) concentrations of keratin-based and bone-based tissues can predict THg concentrations in skeletal muscle, renal medulla, renal cortex, and liver. The THg concentration in matched tissues of 65 red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, from western Alaska was determined. Hair THg concentration had a significant positive correlation with liver, renal medulla, renal cortex, and muscle. The THg concentration for males and females is moderately predictive of THg concentration in the renal cortex… Show more

“…In a study of 158 women, 25.29 μg/day of dietary heavy metal intake leads to several osteoporosis cases and fracturing. Dainowski et al [51] studied the total mercury (THg) concentration on muscle, kidney, and liver of red foxes in Western Alaska. It was seen that total mercury concentration in hair is correlated with muscle, kidney, and liver.…”

“…There are, however, limitations with interpreting these trophic level interactions when they are determined only from stable isotope data; for example, the age and health status of the animal [ 42 , 43 ]. The average life span of a red fox is five years in the wild; the animal is sexually mature at around 10 months [ 5 ]. The red fox may move north into the Arctic fox range following development of road systems [ 44 ].…”
