Haemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma with presumed involvement of the skeletal musculature in a greyhound

Abstract

An 11‐year‐old male neutered Greyhound was evaluated for severe generalized pain of one‐week duration. Lameness, hyporexia, acute diarrhoea and pyrexia were also listed symptoms. Computerized tomography of thorax and abdomen revealed splenomegaly with multiple nodules, mediastinal, tracheobronchial and hepatic lymphadenomegaly, and multiple irregular and hypoattenuating skeletal muscular lesions. Ultrasound‐guided aspirates of the spleen, hepatic lymph nodes and muscular lesions were performed followed by splenectomy, hepatic biopsy and excision of multiple intra‐abdominal lymph nodes. The final diagnosis after histopathology and immunohistochemistry was haemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma with presumed involvement of skeletal musculature. The patient was euthanised due to clinical deterioration and grave prognosis.
