Haemodynamic responses to stimulation of the cardiac autonomic nerves in the anaesthetized cat with closed chest

Abstract: SUMMARY1. The changes in cardiac output and mean right atrial pressure (R.A.P.) evoked by stimulation of the cardiac autonomic nerves were investigated in cats under chloralose anaesthesia, with unopened chests and spontaneous respiration, and with active vascular reflexes. Cardiac output was measured by thermal dilution; the technique used was calibrated against the direct Fick method.2. The initial values of R.A.P. and output were varied by infusion of dextran-saline solution followed by withdrawal of blood.… Show more

“…The right and left greater and lesser splanchnic nerves were identified and cut and the distal ends were placed on shielded stimulating electrodes similar to those used on the cardiac nerves. The procedures and equipment used for recording heart rate, aortic and right atrial pressures and for exposure and stimulation of the cardiac sympathetic nerves without penetration of the pleura have been described elsewhere (Barnes et al 1980).…”

“…Portal venous pressure was measured in some experiments through a soft vinyl catheter (SV45; Dural Plastics and Engineering) inserted through a vein from the spleen or terminal ileum; in two cats a second catheter (Insulon Medical V4;Bolab Inc.) Barnes et al (1980).…”

“…The right kidney was generally removed to facilitate identification of the intestinal lymph duct, which was cannulated just anterior to the renal vein, as it coursed over the ventro-medial aspect of the posterior vena cava towards the cysterna chylae. Both splanchnic nerves were cut immediately below the diaphragm and the peripheral ends enclosed in fluid electrodes constructed of silver wire and silicone rubber, as described by Barnes, Bower & Rink (1980). A standard 10-15 V square-wave stimulus (pulse width 0-5 msec) was applied throughout, usually for a period of 10 min.…”

“…Except as otherwise stated, both splanchnic nerves were cut immediately below the diaphragm. In some animals, the peripheral ends of the splanchnic nerves were enclosed in fluid electrodes constructed of silver wire and silicone rubber (Barnes, Bower & Rink, 1979) and both adrenal glands were also removed. Following adrenalectomy steroid replacement therapy was instituted by the administration of desoxycortisone acetate (0-2 mg/kg) and cortisol (10 0 mg/kg) by intramuscular injection.…”
