Haematopoietic effects of Angelica sinensis root cap polysaccharides against lisinopril-induced anaemia in albino rats

Abstract: Context: Angelica sinensis L. (Umbelliferae) has medicinal properties. Objectives: The present study evaluates the haematopoietic effects of A. sinensis polysaccharides (ASP) against lisinopril-induced anaemia. Materials and methods: Thirty healthy adult male albino rats were randomly divided into five groups (n ¼ 6). Group I was control group. Group II was treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI, 20 mg/kg/day) to induce anaemia. In group III, erythropoietin (EPO, 100 IU/kg/each) was adminis… Show more

“…The haematopoietic effect of ASR could be mainly ascribed to the water-soluble fraction because the polysaccharides isolated from ASR were found to restore the HGB levels and promote bone marrow haematopoiesis in different blood-deficient rodent models [ 14 , 21 ] and a clinical case of haemodialysis patient [ 22 ]. The underlying mechanisms were demonstrated as the ASR polysaccharides stimulate erythropoietin production and improve iron availability via activating janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signalling pathway [ 13 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…On the other hand, CHMs frequently applied to patients for improving the symptoms associated with anaemia, Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Astragali Radix for instance, have been demonstrated to regulate haematopoiesis by a number of previous works [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. These CHMs are not included in the prohibited list nor should contain any banned substances.…”

“…33 Liu et al suggested that the hematopoietic and thrombopoietic effects of ASP may result from the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) pathways. 34 In addition, ASP can increase the number of red blood cells and the content of hemoglobin [35][36][37] by up-regulating theexpression of cyclin D1 and Bcl-2 protein. 38 At the same time, ASP can stimulate EPO secretion and regulate the pathway of erythropoiesis, and so the level ofhepcidin mRNA decreased with the increase in erythropoiesis rate.…”
