Pregnancy is characterized by important variations in virtually every organ system to accommodate the growing and developing fetoplacental entity. Hence, the objective of this study is to assess the effect of pregnancy on hematological profile of female subjects attending a private hospital in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria using eighty female volunteered individuals comprising sixty pregnant subjects and twenty nonpregnant subjects. The pregnant group was further categorized into three trimesters, each consisting of twenty participants. Results were presented as Mean ± SD and analyzed using GraphPad Prism 5 software (GraphPad Software Inc.), and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Overall, the mean values of lymphocytes, red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and platelets were decreased in the pregnant cohort when compared to the nonpregnant cohort, whereas an incremental rise in white blood cell, and granulocytes were observed in the pregnant cohort when compared to the nonpregnant cohort. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in the mean hematocrit and hemoglobin values was observed when comparing the first-trimester participants with the control participants, although white blood cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes, red blood cells, and platelets were not different (p > 0.05). The average values for white blood cells, granulocytes, red blood cells, hematocrit, and hemoglobin between second-trimester individuals and those of nonpregnant individuals exhibited a significant variance (p < 0.05), while the average lymphocyte and platelet counts showed no significance (p > 0.05). the mean white blood cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes, red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and platelet counts for the third-trimester subjects were significantly different (p < 0.05) when compared to the control subjects. The study outcome suggests that pregnancy affects hematological indices and may be a risk predictor for pregnancy-associated complications.

Introduction: Complete blood count (CBC) parameters change throughout pregnancy and are thought to be one of the factors affecting the pregnancy’s outcome. This study aims to report variations in CBC parameters throughout pregnancy and their association with maternal age and gravidity. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study in which CBC data from 234 pregnancies with normal full-term delivery in 2020 were evaluated and grouped depending on maternal age and gravidity. Results: Hemoglobin levels decreased significantly from the first to the second trimester (P < 0.0001) and then slightly increased in the third trimester. Red blood cells decreased significantly from the first to the second trimester and remained unchanged in the third trimester (P < 0.0001). Packed cell volume decreased significantly from the first to the second trimester (P < 0.0001) and then increased in the third trimester (P = 0.0178). White blood cells (WBCs) increased significantly from the first to the second trimester (P < 0.0001) and then remained stable in the third trimester. Neutrophils and lymphocytes showed opposed tendencies, with neutrophils increasing significantly from the first to the second trimester (P < 0.0001) and then remaining stable in the third trimester (P = 0.42). Lymphocytes decreased significantly from the first to the second trimester (P < 0.0001) and continued to decrease in the third trimester (P < 0.0001). Monocytes increased significantly from the first to the third trimester (P = 0.0051). Platelets decreased significantly from the first to the third trimester (P < 0.0001). Gravidity showed a negative correlation with WBC count (r = −0.17, P = 0.01) and a positive correlation with eosinophil levels (r = 0.14, P = 0.0376). Spearman’s correlations revealed no significant differences in maternal age groups. Conclusions: Our findings provide useful insight for physicians and policymakers in assessing CBC during pregnancy and providing optimal care. Furthermore, the associations between gravidity and WBC (negative) and eosinophil levels (positive) point to a potential effect of reproductive history on immune function, necessitating additional research in this area.

Pregnancy or gestation is a physiological condition in which various physiological changes occur. Although pregnancy is a normal phenomenon, several hematological parameters are varied to fulfill the needs of the developing fetus. Sometimes pregnancy becomes complicated due to these changes. Objective: To determine the changes in the hematological profile of healthy pregnant females. Methods: 180 females aged 21 to 34 participated in this study and were placed in a first, second, and third group according to their trimesters, while the fourth group was the control. Each contained 45 females. These women were examined for 12 hematological parameters. Results: When compared with control, it was observed that Hb and RBCs (p-value < 0.05) were lower than control while WBCs (p-value ≤ 0.03) were increased. MCV, MCH and MCHC (p-value < 0.05) showed discontinuous variations along three trimesters. Increase in platelets and neutrophils while a decrease in monocytes, eosinophils, and lymphocytes was observed (p-value <0.02). Conclusions: This study reported several changes in pregnant females' hematological parameters, which helped determine the reference ranges for these parameters. Moreover, pregnant women should have a balanced diet, and their hematological profile should be regularly monitored
