Haematological and biochemical indicators of tropical theileriosis diseased cattle in wilaya of Sétif (North East Algeria)

Abstract: The authors investigated biochemical and haematological parameters in 40 healthy and 40 tropical theileriosis () clinically infected cattle in El Eulma region (North East Algeria). The mean haematological and biochemical parameters including the number of erythrocytes, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular haemoglobin were estimated. The mean hematological and biochemical parameters including the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, he… Show more

“…Duncan's post hoc comparison test showed an increase of erythrocyte osmotic fragility at 0%, 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7% and 0.9% saline concentration in all cattle groups (Figure 17). The finding of normocytic normochromic anaemia in bovine theileriosis agrees with [34]. Hyperglobulinaemia leads to increase in circulating immunoglobulins in response to the invading pathogens by the host immune system [57].…”

“…Results from such tests (Liver and kidney function test) provide valuable information in the diagnosis, surveillance, making a prognosis and monitoring the disease process (static, progressing or regressing) [33]. Haematological and serum biochemical parameters are usually increased or decreased in blood pathogen infections [34]. The alterations are dependent upon type of infecting species, the infectious dose, virulence, immune status of the host and environmental factors.…”

“…For treatment, buparvaquone, the most effective drug against bovine theileriosis (13,14), at 2.5mg/kg.bw intramuscular (IM) as a single dose (15). However, Tunisian and Sudan veterinarians have reported failures of this drug at the recommended dose (2) probably due to developed resistance in those protozoa against the drug (16).…”

“…Infections with Theileria parasites induce a range of hematologic and biochemical changes associated with the intraleukocyte schizont and intra-erythrocyte piroplasm stages. The severity of these changes is related to the virulence of the strain, the infectious dose, the animal breed and immune status [12][13][14]. Experimental infection of cattle and sheep, respectively, with T. annulata and T. lestoquardi, demonstrated a signi cant progressive decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cells, as well as leukopenia and leukocytolysis [15][16][17].…”
