Haematococcus pluvialis Carotenoids Enrich Fractions Ameliorate Liver Fibrosis Induced by Thioacetamide in Rats: Modulation of Metalloproteinase and Its Inhibitor

Abstract: Hepatic fibrosis is a consequence of chronic liver diseases. Metalloproteinase and its inhibitor have crucial roles in the resolution of liver fibrosis. The current relevant study is aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) extract, astaxanthin-rich fraction, astaxanthin ester-rich fraction, and β-carotene-rich fraction as well as their mechanisms of action in curing hepatic fibrosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA). Liver fibrosis was induced using TAA (intraperitoneal … Show more

“…reported that feeding rats with hematococcal biomass, a rich source of AST, increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and the antioxidant enzymes peroxidase, catalase, and SOD in plasma and liver ( 34 ). The results of another study indicated that AST from Haematococcus pluvialis showed the best antioxidant properties and free radical scavenging in rats compared to β-carotene and lutein ( 35 ). In db/db mice, AST not only attenuated the levels of oxidative stress markers including superoxide anion and MDA but also increased SOD in the retinal tissue.…”

“…Therefore, discovery of most effective and less toxic treatment for liver diseases have been increasingly gaining attention. Various natural products have been extensively evaluated for their hepatoprotective role against liver injury caused by different substances ( Salama et al, 2018 , Adewale et al, 2019 , Zhang et al, 2020 , El-Baz et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Rats were divided into four groups ( n = 10), that is, control group (healthy rats), diseased group, quercetin treated group, and silymarin treated group. For the induction of liver fibrosis, thioacetamide (200 mg/kg) was used for 6 weeks 21 . Rats in the diseased group received intraperitoneal injections of thioacetamide twice a week for 6 weeks.…”
