Habitual Physical Activity and Sleep Duration in Institutionalized Older Adults

Abstract: Background: Physical activity and sleep quality are both major factors for improving one's health. Knowledge on the interactions of sleep quality and the amount of physical activity may be helpful for implementing multimodal health interventions in older adults. Methods: This preliminary cross-sectional study is based on 64 participants [82.1 ± 6.4 years (MD ± SD); 22 male: 42 female]. The amount of physical activity was assessed by means of an accelerometer (MyWellness Key). Self-reported sleep parameters were… Show more

“…Consequently, beyond being an effector or outcome in intervention studies, sleep duration is related to physical activity (McClain et al, 2014;Mendelson et al, 2016). In addition, old age habitual physical activity is predicted by movement biography (Vogel et al, 2021a). According to that, sleep parameters and physical activities are not exclusively related to healthy aging, but exhibit mutual interactions and assumingly respond to multicomponent interventions.…”

“…44 Nevertheless, no association was found between high activity levels and better sleep quality for independently living elders. These healthy people with the highest PA level per week had a sleep duration of ≥5 and <6 h. 5 To examine these complicated relationships and provide additional evidence on the seniors living independently in a Thai nursing home, we propose the following hypothesis: Hypothesis 1. Sedentary behaviors affect sleep duration, regardless of health condition.…”
