The Karkas mountainous region is a very interesting area for its big game wildlife and rare species in the Irano-Touranian biogeographic region. It is essential to study the plant communities and the impact of environmental factors, to protect and rehabilitate these ecosystems. The studied region is located in the Isfahan province, central Iran, with the area of about 92 100 ha. The aim of the study was to identify the plant communities of the Karkas Hunting--Prohibited Region. Vegetation cover was sampled using a stratified random sampling method and the entities were preliminarily segmented with the physiognomic-floristic-ecologic method. 10 × 10 m quadrates (100 m 2 ) were used to estimate the species cover, litter, stone, gravel and bare soil percentages. Plant communities were classified using cluster analyses and denderogram construction. The results confirmed the importance of the climatic and topographic factors that affect the establishment of the plant communities. Plant habitats in the region are mosaics and cause ecoton formations, so diversities in species combinations increase. The species diversity of the communities was measured using the Shannon coefficient; it varied from 2.26 to 0.39. According to cluster analyses, there are 15 different plant communities, but when the second dominant species were considered, some communities were further divided into sub-communities.

Goitered gazelles, Gazella subgutturosa, exist in arid and semiarid regions of Asia from the Middle to the Far East. Although large populations were present over a vast area until recently, a decline of the population as a result of hunting, poaching, and habitat loss led to the IUCN classification of G. subgutturosa as “vulnerable." We examined genetic diversity, structure, and phylogeny of G. subgutturosa using mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences from 18 geographically distant populations in Iran. The median‐joining network of cyt b haplotypes indicated that three clades of goitered gazelles can be distinguished: a Middle Eastern clade west of the Zagros Mountains (and connected to populations in Turkey and Iraq), a Central Iranian clade (with connection to Azerbaijan), and an Asiatic clade in northeastern Iran (with connection to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and other Asian countries as far as northeastern China and Mongolia). Based on our results, we argue that Iran is the center of diversification of goitered gazelles, due to the presence of large mountain ranges and deserts that lead to the separation of populations. In accordance with previous morphological studies, we identified the Asiatic clade as the subspecies G. s. yarkandensis, and the other two clades as the nominate form G. s. subgutturosa. The new genetic information for goitered gazelles in Iran provides the basis for future national conservation programs of this species.

Identifying noise disturbance by roads on wildlife: a case study in central Iran

Noise is a spatially extensive pollutant with recognized impacts on habitats and wildlife species. Expansion of roads into protected areas and wild places is contemplated as a major source of noise pollution whose measurement can shed light on the impacts of road traffic noise pollution on habitats and species. In this research, the SPreAD-GIS was employed to model road traffic noise propagation in Mouteh Wildlife Refuge, central Iran, independently for cold (winter and autumn) and warm (summer and spring) seasons. The MaxEnt model was also used to characterize the potential suitability of habitat for Persian gazelle. Finally, the noise-affected habitats were identified using the overlay method. According to the results, 53,461 ha of the wildlife refuge was characterized as highly suitable habitats, of which noise-affected areas accounted for 1522 ha (283 ha with a high noise level) during the cold seasons and 1159.8 ha (246 ha with a high noise level) during the warm seasons of the year. Field surveys showed that most populations responded to noise pollution by preserving distance from high-level noise (40 dB <) regions, indicating that high-level noise-affected habitats of Persian gazelle have been functionally lost. This study indicated that the identification of the affected habitats and populations through modeling can be an appropriate and cost-effective means to determine the primary species response to traffic noise and minimize its adverse impacts for sustainably managing wildlife populations.
