Habitat use and circadian pattern of Solitary Tinamou Tinamus solitarius in a southern Brazilian Atlantic rainforest

Abstract: SummarySolitary Tinamou Tinamus solitarius is a threatened Brazilian bird, and very little is known about its ecology and behaviour. In this study we aimed to verify the use of habitats in different stages of plant succession and the circadian activity pattern of the species. The study was conducted in Santa Catarina state (27º43'S, 48º49'W). Six camera traps were used to record the species in three areas of different successional stages during a 12-month period. Traps remained at each sample site for two mont… Show more

“…At the daily scale, the species called at any time of the day but at a higher rate in the early morning and late afternoon. This diel pattern is consistent with that found among other genera of tinamous, such as Crypturellus (Lancaster, ; Skutch, ), Nothoprocta (Lancaster, ; Pearson & Pearson, ), and Tinamous (Kuhnen, Lima, Santos, & Machado Filho, ; Lancaster, ). In the only reference found for the Undulated Tinamou, Pearman () stated that, in Argentina, the species was only found to vocalize for 15 min at dawn and dusk.…”

“…The individuals of T. solitarius showed a diurnal activity in the RNV. The daily activity of T. solitarius in the RNV for the present study was similar of that of previous estimation carried out in the same locality by Dias et al (2016), and similar to that obtained in the study conducted at the Serra do Tabuleiro State Park (Kuhnen et al 2013).…”

“…However, there are few information on the ecology of the T. solitarius. Excepting the study of Kuhnen et al (2013), information D r a f t available on the species are restricted to anecdotal data found in bird guides and in handbooks, with only few studies concerning aspects of its ecology (e. g . Bokermann 1991;Sick 1997;Brooks et al 2004;Schelsky 2004;Sigrist 2009).…”
