The habitat preferences, temporal dynamics in density and the life history of two species of mayflies, Metamonius anceps and Meridialaris chiloeensis, were investigated in a Patagonian mountain stream over a period of one year. Benthic samples were taken in a low order Nothofagus forested stream. M. anceps was univoltine with small nymphs predominating in winter and emergence occurring in summer. M. chiloeensis showed a bivoltine life cycle with a winter and summer generation, and emergence period in spring and summer. Both species were significantly more abundant in the low water period than in the high discharge season. Gravels supported significantly more individuals of M. chiloeensis than sand in pools and leaf packs. Temporal overlap of abundance between species was low. The existence of different life history strategies and the temporal shift of main generations and density peaks were critical to allow species coexistence.

-Resource availability influences the flow of energy through food webs, thus affecting biomass and trophic structure of consumer communities. To assess the effect of availability of allochthonous (leaf litter) and autochthonous (periphyton) resources on the trophic structure of macroinvertebrates, we sampled monthly for a year two sites (upstream forested, downstream open canopy) of Challhuaco, a low order mountain stream in the Patagonian Andes. Leaf litter and periphyton dynamics showed the expected pattern, peaking in autumn and spring, respectively. Temporal variations of shredders and scrapers were synchronized, with the logic delay, with resource abundance. Although leaf litter mass was similar at both stream reaches, shredders were more abundant at the forest site. Periphyton biomass was higher at the forest, while scrapers were more abundant at the open site. The patterns of resource and consumer abundance, and community functional structure were mostly explained by the interaction of abiotic factors and trophic relationships.

Estudio taxonómico de RESUMENSe realiza un estudio taxonómico de C. puerilis. Se redescribe la ninfa y describen los adultos de ambos sexos. Se identifi can 17 rasgos en oposición con las restantes especies de Chilenoperla seis en adultos y once en ninfas. Estos resultados apoyan una nueva combinación nomenclatural para la especie dentro de un nuevo género nombrado Ericiataperla. El caso estudiado muestra la relevancia de asociar correctamente los estados de desarrollo en insectos acuáticos, para así asignarles atributos ecológicos y estimar la diversidad de los taxa involucrados. PALABRAS CLAVE:Gripopterygidae, insectos acuáticos, morfología, ninfas. ABSTRACTI perform a taxonomic study for C. puerilis. From the description of male and female adults, and redescription of the nymph, six adult and eleven immature traits were identifi ed in opposition to the remaining species of Chilenoperla. With these results, I propose a new genus, Ericiataperla, at which I have assigned the species in question under a new combination. The case study shows the importance of correctly associate the developmental stages in aquatic insects to assign ecological attributes and estimate the diversity of the taxa involved.
