Habitat suitability modeling of a conservation‐significant fish species of the Kosi River, Uttarakhand, India

Abstract: Water quality plays a vital role in the sustenance of aquatic life, including fish. Therefore, an inclusive understanding of water quality parameters can be considered an essential step in framing the conservation and management strategy of an aquatic ecosystem. This study examines the habitat suitability of a conservation-significant fish, the Tor putitora, and two associated fishes, the Labeo dyocheilus and the Garra gotyla, in relation to the water quality parameters of the Kosi River. Four crucial water qu… Show more

“…It is home to a diverse range of aquatic wildlife, such as smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata), mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris), turtles (Nilssonia gangetica), and gharials (Gavialis gangeticus), including many fish species such as Tor putitora, Tor tor, Labeo rohita, Chagunius chagunio, Mastacembelus armatus, etc. (Khwairakpam et al, 2023). Despite being a promising water channel, urbanisation along the Kosi banks has significantly affected its habitats and wildlife (Mondal & Zhang, 2018).…”

“…According to the current research, most studies only focus on a single species in a particular river, most of which are endangered or protected species [13][14][15][16][17]. However, implementing habitat enhancement measures for a single target can often affect the habitat suitability and distribution of all species in the study area.…”
