Habitat Suitability Assessment of Wintering Herbivorous Anseriformes in Poyang Lake, China

Abstract: To design a good conservation strategy for herbivorous Anseriformes wintering in Poyang Lake, knowledge of habitat suitability is essential. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the habitat suitability of herbivorous Anseriformes of China’s Poyang Lake. Landsat images with a resolution of 30 m downloaded from the United States Geological Survey, and other ancillary data were used. The ENVI 5.3 software and ArcGIS 10.2 software were used for preprocessing, classifying the satellite image, and mapping habitat s… Show more

“…(2013, 2018), NDVI was calculated as the implication of habitat quality and land use land cover (Figure 2). The NDVI was assumed to reflect food availability for birds (Debela et al., 2021) and was calculated using the spectral bands of red (Rred) and near‐infrared (Rnir) of the Landsat 8 images in ArcGIS 10.5 using the following equation:NDVIgoodbreak=RnirRredRnir+Rredwhere, NDVI is the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index, Rnir and Rred are the reflectance in the near‐infrared and red bands, respectively.…”

“…traits among different tribes in the Anseriformes (Peters et al, 2012). Most tribes tend to live in inland streams, rivers, or ponds, such as the Anatini, Aythyini, and Anserini tribes (Debela et al, 2021;Ponomarenko et al, 2021).…”

“…Marshes are the largest wetland with a diverse aquatic ecosystem in southwest Asia, covering an area of about 15,000 km 2 and accounting for approximately 44 percent of Iraq's inland freshwater. The habitats of marshes vary depending on various definitive factors such as hydrology, water temperature, salinity, primary production, and nutrients 3,4 . The marshes are considered one of the most biodiverse areas, with many different types of life, such as aquatic plants, fish, and birds.…”

“…This situation drove hard hydrological variations, which relatively became longer, sharper, and more effective, and they have caused a significant impact on the biota in these wetlands. The fish populations suffer from extermination in flatlying areas in the dry season [1][2][3][4][5][6] . In contrast, the immersion period has become shorter, with lower water levels.…”
