Habitat loss and mammalian extinction patterns: are the reserves in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, southeastern Brazil, effective in conserving mammals?

Abstract: Habitat loss is considered to be the principal cause of the local extinction of mammals worldwide. We assessed the extinction pattern of medium-and largesized mammals caused by the effects of habitat loss in reserves in the Quadrila´tero Ferrı´fero, southeastern Brazil, and discussed the effectiveness of these natural remnants for conserving mammals. A literature review and field collections were conducted from 2006 to 2011 to estimate the composition and richness of mammals in nine remnants of different sizes… Show more

“…Protected areas continue to provide the central mechanism for conserving biodiversity (Bruner et al, 2001;Gaston et al, 2008;Morcatty et al, 2013). Discussion of how effective this mechanism is as a conservation tool has focused on the ability of protected areas to capture biodiversity (Yahnke, de Fox & Colman, 1998;Barr et al, 2016).…”

“…Most studies focus on mammals (e.g. Woinarski et al, 2010;Morcatty et al, 2013), particularly large mammals (Stoner et al, 2007;Newmark, 2008;Craigie et al, 2010), which have very large spatial requirements and are often targets of poaching (e.g. Maisels et al, 2013;Kretzschmar et al, 2016).…”

“…Habitat loss is a major source of biodiversity decline and extinction worldwide and is continuing at a rapid pace (Morcatty et al, 2013). In the U.S., private land accounts for approximately 60% of land area and harbors high levels of biodiversity due to historical homesteading patterns where land with more productive natural resources was settled and privatized first (Scott et al, 2001).…”

“…If the distance were higher, the opposite will occur. In the first case, an example could be the critically endangered northern muriqui ( Brachyteles hypoxanthus ), a forest dependent primate which has an unconfirmed record in Iron Quadrangle [ 78 ]. An example of a less sensitive mammal species occurring in the Iron Quadrangle is the tapir ( Tapirs terrestris ), listed as Vulnerable by IUCN [ 78 ].…”
