Nutrition is a major factor that can have long-term effects on the brain's structural and functional capacity. The interplay between nutrition and child development cannot be overemphasised, especially in developing countries. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the nutritional status of under-fives and determine the relationship between the nutritional status and their developmental quotient. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was undertaken involving 415 under-fives aged 6-59 months in selected pre-schools and immunisation centres. Developmental assessment was done using the Schedule of Growing Skills II. The nutritional status was assessed using the WHO growth charts for weight-forage , weight-for-height and height-forage. Chi-square and odds ratio with 95% confidence interval were used to determine the association between nutritional status and selected developmental domains. Results: The mean age was 32.6 ± 15.9 months. The male to female ratio was 1.2:1. The overall prevalence of developmental delay was 35.4%, with manipulative domain accounting for the highest delay (25.8%). The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight was 9.1, 3.8 and 3.8% while 2.2% were overweight. Weight-forage had a significant association with the hearing and language domain (OR 3.25, 95% CI 1.09-9.72, p = 0.036,) and interactive social domain (OR 5.0, 95% CI 2.0-13.0, p = 0.001). Conclusion: The nutritional status of a child has an effect on certain developmental domains of that child. Interventions to improve the nutritional status of under-fives will go a long way to facilitating the development of this group of children.

O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as prováveis inter-relações entre a desnutrição e as alterações do processamento auditivo central. Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática de literatura, na qual foram encontrados 2543 estudos. Três trabalhos atenderam a todos os critérios e foram selecionados. Os resultados encontrados na avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo central em sujeitos desnutridos ou com histórico de desnutrição demonstraram alterações na escuta competitiva, habilidade de sequencialização sonora verbal e não verbal, fechamento auditivo e figura fundo. Além disso, na avaliação do processamento por meio de medidas eletrofisiológicas, foram identificadas latências aumentadas nos componentes P1, N1 e P300. Existem prováveis evidências de alteração no processamento auditivo central em crianças com histórico de desnutrição. No entanto, tais inter-relações ainda precisam ser aprofundadas e esclarecidas em outros estudos. Em decorrência da complexidade deste assunto, destaca-se a importância da atuação e pesquisa transdisciplinar nas interfaces da Fonoaudiologia e da Nutrição.Palavras-Chave: Desenvolvimento infantil; Desnutrição; Audição; Perda auditiva; Transtornos da percepção auditiva; Doenças auditivas centraisABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to analyze the possible interrelationships between malnutrition and auditory processing disorders. It is a systematic review of the literature. The search found 2543 studies. The three that met all the study criteria were selected. The results in behavioral auditory processing evaluation in undernourished subjects or subjects with malnutrition history have shown changes in the competitive listening, verbal sound sequencing skills and non-verbal, auditory closure and figure background. Moreover, the evaluation processing through electrophysiological measurements were latencies identified in increased P1, N1 and P300. There is possible evidence of change in auditory processing in children with malnutrition history. However, these interrelationships have yet to be deepened and clarified in other studies. Due to the complexity of this subject, the importance of transdisciplinary research and performance in the speech-language and nutritional interfaces is highlighted.Keywords: Child development; Malnutrition; Hearing; Hearing loss; Auditory perceptual disorders; Central auditory diseases

Introduction Speech tests such as logoaudiometry measure the ability to perceive and recognize oral sounds. The Speech Recognition Index (SRI) is one of the speech tests adopted in clinical routine; it uses standardized live voice and recorded speeches. The live voice speech method can be influenced by intra and interspeaker variability, as well as by regionalism variability, whereas recorded tests show consistency in their presentation. Objective Analyzing results of the SRI test applied to live voice and recorded speeches from Paraná State, in different Brazilian counties. Method The sample comprised 125 individuals, 25 from each county (Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Salvador and Curitiba), from both sexes, in the age group 20 to 70 years; the SRI was applied in both techniques. Results The recorded speech method showed prevalence of hit improvement in Rio de Janeiro (40%), Salvador, Porto Alegre and Florianópolis (28%). Individuals from Salvador and Florianópolis subjected to the recorded speech method showed better results in the left ear. Individuals from Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre showed satisfactory results in both ears, whereas those from Curitiba did not show statistically significant difference between the left and the right ear. Conclusion The recorded CD application method showed prevalence of hit improvement (%) in the SRI responses in comparison to the live voice speech technique in most of the studied counties. According to the hit rate measured in the herein investigated counties, Rio de Janeiro showed the best results in the recorded speech method.
