H2and CO Emission from Disks around T Tauri and Herbig Ae Pre–Main‐Sequence Stars and from Debris Disks around Young Stars: Warm and Cold Circumstellar Gas

Abstract: We present ISO Short-Wavelength Spectrometer observations of pure-rotational line emission H 2 from the disks around low-and intermediate-mass preÈmain-sequence stars as well as from young stars thought to be surrounded by debris disks. The preÈmain-sequence sources have been selected to be isolated from molecular clouds and to have circumstellar disks revealed by millimeter interferometry. We detect "" warm ÏÏ (T B 100È200 K) gas around many sources, including tentatively the debris-disk H 2 objects. The mass… Show more

“…. Warm H 2 gas is reported by Thi et al (2001). Similar to the case of HD 144668, resolved Chandra images show that most of the Xray emission comes from the T Tauri companion, but weak emission is attributed to the Herbig star (Stelzer et al 2006).…”

“…Dent et al (2005) derived a disk inclination of 11 • , obtained from measurements of CO gas. The presence of warm H 2 gas is reported by Thi et al (2001), which should be treated with caution due to the low S /N and low spatial resolution of ISO data.…”

“…In the simplest analysis, the H 2 excitation is assumed to be in local thermal equilibrium (LTE) (e.g., Thi et al 2001) with an ortho-to-para ratio determined by the kinetic temperature of the gas (following Sternberg & Neufeld 1999). For gas temperatures 100, 150, and ≥200 K, the ortho-to-para ratios are 1.6, 2.5, and 3, respectively.…”

“…These low-J transitions originate in cold, optically thick CO that is located in the outer disc and are routinely detected in HAEBEs (e.g., Thi et al 2001;Dent et al 2005) and in TTS (e.g., Koerner & Sargent 1995;Öberg et al 2010). As the lines are optically thick, the outer disc radius can be estimated from the line profile (e.g., Dent et al 2005;Panić et al 2008).…”
