H.E.S.S. andSuzakuobservations of the Vela X pulsar wind nebula

Abstract: Context. Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) represent the most prominent population of Galactic very-high-energy gamma-ray sources and are thought to be an efficient source of leptonic cosmic rays. Vela X is a nearby middle-aged PWN, which shows bright X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission towards an elongated structure called the cocoon. Aims. Since TeV emission is likely inverse-Compton emission of electrons, predominantly from interactions with the cosmic microwave background, while X-ray emission is synchrotron radiati… Show more

“…Similarly, the 11 kyr-old Vela X shows a compact TeV emission, coincident with a bright X-ray nebula and an extended region with similar spectrum. The extended region also coincides with a radio halo [34], which might be a sign of particles escaping [21,[35][36][37]. However, the majority of the TeV PWNe are consistent with a relic scenario.…”

“…1). For objects in this stage, TeV observations with Cherenkov telescopes, combining good energy and angular resolution, allowed disentangling between emission properties in different subregions, proving efficient particle cooling and diffusive propagation within the nebula [20][21][22][23].…”
