H2O2 modulates the energetic metabolism of the cloud microbiome

Abstract: Abstract. Chemical reactions in clouds lead to oxidation processes driven by radicals (mainly HO q , NO q 3 , or HO q 2 ) or strong oxidants such as H 2 O 2 , O 3 , nitrate, and nitrite. Among those species, hydrogen peroxide plays a central role in the cloud chemistry by driving its oxidant capacity. In cloud droplets, H 2 O 2 is transformed by microorganisms which are metabolically active. Biological activity can therefore impact the cloud oxidant capacity. The present article aims at highlighting the intera… Show more

“…Bacteria become dormant (Kaprelyants and Kell, 1993) or have reduced viability at relative humidities of 86 %-97 % (Haddrell and Thomas, 2017). In soil samples, it has been shown that cycles of drying and rewetting might enhance microbial activity compared to constantly moist samples (Meisner et al, 2017;Xiang et al, 2008); thus, it may be speculated that such effects also occur in rapidly changing humidity conditions in atmospheric deliquesced aerosols. Under those conditions, the time fraction of microbial activity would exceed F cloud .…”

“…Experiments in atmospheric chambers allowed estimation of a half-life of $4 h for Pseudomonas syringae bacteria (Amato et al 2015). In the atmosphere, many environmental factors will have additional adverse effects on bacterial cells, resulting in even shorter half-lives (Wirgot et al 2017;Joly et al 2015;Smith et al 2011).…”

“…The typical operation mode for the two radar systems corresponds to below 1 min time integration and below 100 m range resolution with a maximum range between 20 and 36 km according to experimental and weather conditions. These radar systems have been involved in the COPS (Convective Orographicallydriven Precipitation Study) (Hagen et al, 2011;Wulfmeyer et al, 2011) and HYMEX (HYdrological cycle in Mediterranean Experiment) (Zwiebel et al, 2016) international campaigns. In 2019, due to technical problems, the older radar was removed from the Cézeaux platform and replaced with the ELDES system.…”
