Gyroless Attitude Estimation of Sun-Pointing Satellites Using Magnetometers

Abstract: Deterministic attitude estimation methods based on vector observations are used for the coarse-attitude calculation of the sun-pointing satellites. The objective of the deterministic attitude estimation is to get the direction cosine matrix without considering the stochastic noises. The existing deterministic attitude estimation methods require two complete (three-axis) vector observations corresponding to two known reference vectors. This letter suggests a new deterministic attitude estimation method using on… Show more

“…During these intervals, attitude can be estimated by making use of the sensor measurements like single-frame methods. In [8], a simple method is suggested for attitude estimation of low Earth orbiting satellite in the Sun acquisition mode. In [9], an algorithm is proposed having switch logic depending on the phase of the mission, eclipse period, critical angular velocity, and critical attitude.…”

“…Recently, new attitude determination schemes have been developed for satellite control in the presence of incomplete vector measurements (see the next section for the precise definition of ''incomplete vector measurements'') 16,17) based on geometrical configuration. A deterministic attitude estimation method was established for the coarse-attitude calculation of the sun-pointing satellites.…”

“…A deterministic attitude estimation method was established for the coarse-attitude calculation of the sun-pointing satellites. 16) Although the method proposed by Ahn and Lee 16) is capable of estimating the attitude in the presence of incomplete vector measurements, the application is limited to the attitude estimation only when the x-axis is pointing towards a known direction. Nonlinear simultaneous equation was solved for a closedloop form of attitude determination with incomplete vector measurements.…”
