Gut microbiome health and dysbiosis: A clinical primer

Abstract: The gut microbiome has been referred to as the “forgotten organ.” Although much about the gut microbiome remains incompletely understood, data on its clinical importance is emerging at rapid speed. Many practicing clinicians may be unaware of the essential role that the microbiome plays in both health and disease. This review aims to improve clinical understanding of the gut microbiome by discussing key terminology and foundational concepts. The role of a healthy microbiome in normal host function is described… Show more

“…‘All diseases begin in the gut’; this principle made by Hippocrates affected all aspects of therapeutic and research strategies in modern medicine 25 . Gut microbiota consists of about 100 trillion microorganisms weighing up to 1.5 kg; due to the numerous vital functions of these microbes, researchers consider them as a virtual organ 26 . Dysbiosis status, an imbalance in the composition of the gut microbiota, has been related to various diseases, especially autoimmune disorders 27 .…”

“…Imbalances in the microbiome, known as dysbiosis, extend beyond gastrointestinal concerns and carry serious implications for overall health. Scientific literature indicates links between dysbiosis and various diseases, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, anxiety, depression, and even conditions like psychotic episodes in ASD (Bidell et al, 2022). In 2002, the WHO published a report emphasizing the importance of addressing dysbiosis and its impact on overall health.…”

“…An imbalance of the distribution of microorganisms in the microbiome and an abnormal physiological state is called dysbiosis. In particular, dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiome causes a variety of diseases, and considerable research on the involvement of intestinal bacteria in disease has been conducted [17] , [18] . Dysbiosis of intestinal bacteria results in an increase in the number of harmful species.…”
