Guillain-Barré syndrome following chickenpox: a case series

Abstract: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, usually triggered by an infectious episode, mostly of viral origin. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a rare cause of GBS, mainly in the case of latent infection reactivation. We report on three adult patients who developed GBS following chickenpox, after a short period of latency. They were promptly treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, and the first one with plasma exchange additionally. All the patients experienced almost co… Show more

“…Malignant varicella in adults Immunocompetent is an emergency involving the functional prognosis and vital with a risk of mortality, mainly related to pneumonia Varicella in 30%, greater after 50 years and complications Neurological disorders [4]. The treatment is based, in addition to the measures of resuscitation and local care on Aciclovir at 10 mg/kg/ 08h for one Minimum of seven days [1,2,4]. The delay in management anticipates mortality and functional sequelae [3].…”

“…In most cases, GBS follows an infection due to Campylobacter jejuni or cytomegalovirus and, more rarely, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza virus, Zika virus, and Epstein-Barr virus (33)(34)(35)(36)(37). The association of GBS with other pathogens, such as measles virus, varicellazoster virus and Haemophilus influenzae, is debated (38)(39)(40). Four main subtypes of GBS, which are differentiated by nerve electrophysiological findings, have been identified: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN), and Miller Fisher syndrome (41).…”
