Guiding the Talent and Career Development of the Gifted Individual

Abstract: The authors highlight challenges that gifted individuals may encounter in their career development and propose a theory‐informed career counseling framework to help guide them through the process. Special consideration is given to issues that may be salient for gifted individuals in career counseling sessions. Uncontrollable factors that might influence their career decision making, including socioeconomic status, race, gender, and sexual orientation, are also addressed.

“…According to the literature, differentiation of career counseling needs for gifted students is pivotal in preparing them to optimize their talent domains (Greene, ; Kerr & Erb, ; Muratori & Smith, ; Wood & Gavin, ); however, nothing exists currently that specifies how this is best accomplished with twice‐exceptional students. One would presume the attention would be twofold.…”

“…As a result, the fate of those accelerated students who finish high school earlier than their peers is still ambiguous, as the educational options and alternatives are limited. In addition, faculty members at universities are often unaware of gifted students' academic, social, and emotional needs at university level (Muratori et al, 2015).…”
