Shallow groundwater vulnerability mapping of the southwestern Nigeria sedimentary basin was assessed in this study with the aim of developing a regional-based vulnerability map for the area based on assessing the intrinsic ability of the aquifer overlying beds to filter and degrade migrating pollutant. The mapping includes using the established seven parameter-based DRASTIC vulnerability methodology. Furthermore, the developed vulnerability map was subjected to sensitivity analysis as a validation approach. This approach includes single-parameter sensitivity, map removal sensitivity, and DRASTIC parameter correlation analysis. Of the Dahomey Basin, 21% was classified as high-vulnerability and at risk of pollution, 61% as moderate vulnerability, and 18% as low vulnerability. Low vulnerability areas of the basin are characterised by thick vadose zones, low precipitation, compacted soils, high slopes, and high depth to groundwater. High-vulnerability areas which are prone to pollution are regions closer to the coast with flat slopes and frequent precipitation. Sensitivity of the vulnerability map show the greatest impact with the removal of topography, soil media, and depth to groundwater and least impact with the removal of the vadose zone. Due to the subjectivity of the DRASTIC method, the most important single parameter affecting the rating system of the Dahomey Basin DRASTIC map is the impact of the vadose zone, followed by the net recharge and hydraulic conductivity. The DRASTIC vulnerability map can be useful in planning and siting activities that generate pollutants (e.g., landfill, soak away, automobile workshops, and petrochemical industries) which pollute the environment, groundwater, and eventually impact the environmental health of the Dahomey Basin’s inhabitants.

Groundwater represents 95% of the world’s unfrozen freshwater. The use of groundwater has significantly increased over the past 50 years and is expected to rise in future due to its high reliability during drought seasons, good quality, generally modest development costs and continuous depletion of surface water. Groundwater pollution is becoming a major threat to fresh groundwater availability and sustainability. The deteriorating groundwater quality and increasing contamination poses detrimental risk to human health and ecosystem in many ways, thereby necessitating the need to study the groundwater vulnerability assessment as a preventive strategy to protect the groundwater from surface pollution. The concept of groundwater vulnerability assessment is dated back in 1970s and applied in many developed countries as an environmental tool used for proper land use planning and decision making without jeopardizing groundwater quality. This paper is a detail review of available literature on the study of groundwater vulnerability assessment in Kenya. The paper revealed that, the vulnerability assessment concept has not been applied as a mechanism to prevent groundwater pollution, hence rarely used in guiding land use planning in Kenya. Groundwater Potential Mapping Using Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Machine Learning Techniques

Adequate groundwater development for the rural population is essential because groundwater is an important source of drinking water and agricultural water. In this study, ensemble models of decision tree-based machine learning algorithms were used with geographic information system (GIS) to map and test groundwater yield potential in Yangpyeong-gun, South Korea. Groundwater control factors derived from remote sensing data were used for mapping, including nine topographic factors, two hydrological factors, forest type, soil material, land use, and two geological factors. A total of 53 well locations with both specific capacity (SPC) data and transmissivity (T) data were selected and randomly divided into two classes for model training (70%) and testing (30%). First, the frequency ratio (FR) was calculated for SPC and T, and then the boosted classification tree (BCT) method of the machine learning model was applied. In addition, an ensemble model, FR-BCT, was applied to generate and compare groundwater potential maps. Model performance was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method. To test the model, the area under the ROC curve was calculated; the curve for the predicted dataset of SPC showed values of 80.48% and 87.75% for the BCT and FR-BCT models, respectively. The accuracy rates from T were 72.27% and 81.49% for the BCT and FR-BCT models, respectively. Both the BCT and FR-BCT models measured the contributions of individual groundwater control factors, which showed that soil was the most influential factor. The machine learning techniques used in this study showed effective modeling of groundwater potential in areas where data are relatively scarce. The results of this study may be used for sustainable development of groundwater resources by identifying areas of high groundwater potential.
