Guidelines for the diagnosis of tick-borne bacterial diseases in Europe

Abstract: Ticks are obligate haematophagous acarines that parasitise every class of vertebrate (including man) and have a worldwide distribution. An increasing awareness of tick-borne diseases among clinicians and scientific researchers has led to the recent description of a number of emerging tick-borne bacterial diseases. “…However, pleocytosis may be absent and specific intrathecal antibodies expressed as antiborrelia antibody index (AI) in paired CSF/serum samples may be negative the first few weeks, and in addition, a positive AI may also persist several months and even years despite appropriate antibiotic treatment (5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Therefore, there is a need for additional markers of ongoing LNB.…”
