Guidelines for the Characterization of the Internal Impedance of Lithium-Ion Batteries in PHM Algorithms

Abstract: This article aims to describe the most important aspects to consider when using the concept of internal impedance in algorithms that focus on characterizing the degradation of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The first part of the article provides a literature review that will help the reader understand the concept of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and how Li-ion batteries can be represented through electrochemical or empirical models, in order to interpret the outcome of typical discharge and/or … Show more

“…This severe temperature stress also reduces the lifetime of the PV cells. Several passive [36] and active [37] thermal control systems can be employed to keep the temperature FIGURE 2. Illumination time-series profile at Site #1 from July 6, 2023, to July 5, 2024.…”

“…Currently, LIBs use lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) dissolved in dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), or ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) electrolytes. In the past, EC was used in conjunction with graphite electrodes, for which it is known to form excellent solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) [19]. Ionic liquids with poor SEI formation ability, such as propylene carbonate (PC), alkyl nitriles, and linear sulfones, have allowed to operate graphite anodes with SEI additives such as vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) [20].…”

“…Passive thermal insulation generally consists of multiple layers of coatings and surface finishes, heat sinks and thermal insulations with low conducting materials like layered blankets and foams. Multilayer materials are excessively used to prevent the high thermal flux, reduction of the environmental temperatures, and temperature gradients [64]. Also, Active Thermal Control System (ATCS) can be employed to heat and cool as required to maintain the operating temperature range of different electrical systems as mentioned in [65].…”
