Socioecological systems (SES) hinge on human groups and ecosystems, promoting interdependence and resilience to environmental disturbances. Climate change effects propagate from organism to biomes, likely influencing SES. In southern Brazil, Araucaria Forest is a typical SES due to the historical interaction between humans and biodiversity. We thus aimed to evaluate empirically and theoretically how climate change could disrupt this system by interviewing 97 smallholders and assessing their Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). We evaluated and measured: (i) socioeconomic impact of araucaria’s nut-like seed (pinhão) trade; (ii) ethnoecological knowledge about climate change; and (iii) generated an ecosystem services network. We projected these empiric data with a projected loss of 50-70% of the Araucaria Forest due to climate change to quantify the risks of the potential disruption of this socioecological system. We found evidence that to avoid the disruption of the Araucaria Forests is paramount to value TEK holders, safeguard the historical socioecological interaction, and promote non-mutually exclusive measures in an integrative response to maintain the Araucaria Forests resilient to future disturbances.

Podocarpus lambertii (Podocarpaceae) is an endangered conifer, endemic to Brazil and occurring in continuous forest and forest-grassland landscapes from the Araucaria Forest. Aiming to support conservation efforts for P. lambertii populations and gain insights into the preservation of forest-grassland mosaics in southern Brazil, we assessed the spatial pattern, genetic diversity, and fine-scale genetic structure (FSGS) within a population situated in a forest-grassland mosaic. The study was conducted in a 9-ha plot in forest-grassland mosaic. All P. lambertii individuals with height ≥ 0.1 m were sampled and the population was stratified into four demographic categories (Seedling, Juvenile, Immature, and Reproductive). For each of these categories, we used 13 allozyme markers to evaluate the spatial pattern, genetic diversity and FSGS. All individuals occurred inside the forest-patches, presenting an aggregated pattern of distribution. Low genetic diversity was recorded for all categories and for the population ( H ⌢ E = 0.046 {\mathord{\buildrel{\lower3pt\hbox{$\scriptscriptstyle\frown$}}\over H} _E} = \,0.046 ), as well as a high number of rare alleles (20). Positive and significant FSGS was estimated only for the Juveniles ( θ ⌢ x y = 0.012 {\mathord{\buildrel{\lower3pt\hbox{$\scriptscriptstyle\frown$}}\over \theta } _{xy}} = \,0.012 ) up to maximum distance of 7.1 m, and the minimum viable area for the long-term conservation of Reproductive genetic diversity was approximately 68 ha. The set of our findings suggests that conservation actions need to enhance connectivity among forest-patches to prevent the loss of rare alleles due to genetic drift. Additionally, we highlight the significance of preserving forest-patches as repositories of species diversity and as crucial connectors between populations.

Araucaria (Araucaria angustifolia) is a tree species found in the Southeast and South of Brazil. It is also known as Brazilian pine, presenting fruits of high acceptance. However, its processing generates by-products that are little used. Thus, this work aimed to extract and characterize the cellulose obtained from the pinion husk, as well as to evaluate the contents of ash, lignin, cellulose and α-cellulose in its composition. The raw material and the extracted cellulose were characterized by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As for the contents of chemical composition detected, the husks showed 1.6% ash, 7% extractives, 34% lignin and 55% cellulose, being 46% α-cellulose and 9% hemicellulose. It was observed by XRD that the removal of amorphous materials resulted in a gain of crystallinity (from 19 to 33%). Proving the efficiency of the extraction, the characterization of the cellulose obtained was shown to be of high purity, since the main band of the lignin (FTIR) and the amorphous materials of the cellulosic sample (TGA) disappeared. Finally, this work shows that the pinion bark is a rich source of cellulose, making it possible to obtain nanocrystals.
