Guidelines for phytosociological classifications and descriptions of vegetation in southern Africa

Abstract: Changes in the environment are first observed in changes in the vegetation. Vegetation survey, classification and mapping form the basis on which informed and scientifically defendable decisions on the environment can be taken. The classification and mapping of vegetation is one of the most widely used tools for interpreting complex ecosystems. By identifying different plant communities we are essentially identifying different ecosystems at a particular hierarchical level. Phytosociologists in Europe have been… Show more

“…This study focuses on ~ 100 m scales of individual vegetation patches seen while driving, walking or in aerial photographs (Supporting Information Figure ). These patches have been described and demarcated previously (van der Merwe, Bezuidenhout, & Bradshaw, ) from the classic South African land‐types paradigm (Brown et al, ). However, here we describe vegetation patterns in the landscape from the perspective of ecological boundaries.…”

“…Floristic classifications of vegetation are often the building blocks for many conservation plans and natural resource management maps (Eminagaoglu et al 2006;Brown et al 2013). This study compiled 112 vegetation plots at the Kula Volcano and applied a modified TWINSPAN classification, and five plant community types were identified.…”

“…The Fisher Exact Fidelity Test at P<0.001 were used. The final classification was manually refined according to the Braun-Blanquet procedure [25]. No re-arrangements of clusters or relevĂ©s were done, but only species groups were manually re-arranged.…”
