Guidelines for gene nomenclature in ruminants 1991

Abstract: The set of proposed guidelines for gene nomenclature in sheep (Ovis aries L) and goats (Ca P ra hircus L) which had been drawn up during the 1987 COGNOSAG Workshop at Gontard/Manosque, France, was revised by committees during the 1988 and 1989 COGNOSAG Workshops at Gontard/Manosque, France, and Eugene, Oregon, USA. This set has been revised in July 1991, at a workshop at Gontard/Manosque, France, to accommodate all ruminants and to facilitate the development of a comparative genome nomenclature. cattle / goat … Show more

“…The standard gene nomenclature rules for ruminants refer to the alpha globin genetic system as HBA and to the beta locus as HBB (Andresen et al, 1991). Accordingly, and analogously to the horse nomen-clature (Sandberg and Cothran, 2000), the buffalo HBA haplotypes were named A and B, and the presence of the beta slow variant was indicated by simply adding a superscripted letter "s" to the usual allele HBB (HBB ).…”

“…Since locus and allele nomenclature will generally follow the human guidelines, the following sections, 'Naming loci and alleles' and 'Genotype terminology', were modified from Shows et al (1987) (p 12-15) to reflect poultry-specific aspects of nomenclature and to use known genes of the chicken as examples. Guidelines for gene nomenclature in ruminants have previously been published in Genetics Selection Evolution (Andresen et al, 1991; Cognosag, 1995).…”

“…The guidelines from the 1993 Workshop, held at the Turretfield Research Centre, Rosedale, South Australia, are based on earlier proposals from COGNOSAG Workshops at Gontard/Manosque France, July 1986 and July 1987 (Lauvergne and Searle;, Gontard/Manosque, July 1988, andEugene/Oregon, June 1989 (Alexieva et al, 1990) and Gontard/Manosque, July 1991 (Andresen et al, 1991).…”

“…The core of these revised guidelines consists of the 1991 proposals (Andresen et al, 1991). Their re-wording has been undertaken to reduce their length, and to increase their clarity.…”
