Guided wave–based approach for ice detection on wind turbine blades

Abstract: An efficient ice detection system is an important tool to optimize the de-icing processes in wind turbines operating in cold climate regions. The aim of this work is to study the application of guided wave for ice detection on wind turbine blades. Computational model is developed to simulate guided wave propagation on composite structures. The model has been validated with experimental data obtained in cold climate laboratory. Effect of ice accretion on composite structures is studied in the time, frequency an… Show more

“…Those parameters are related to the propagation distance x as well as the wavenumber k(ω) of the Lamb mode. If the parameters k 1 , k 2 and f can be obtained, the wave packet with arbitrary propagation distance x can be predicted by equation (6). The parameters…”

“…Lamb wave is ultrasonic guided wave propagating in thin plates and it can travel a long distance with less energy loss and is sensitive to both surface and internal damage of structures. Lamb wave has been studied and applied in many fields including wind turbine blades [5,6], and aircrafts [7][8][9][10]. The multi-mode and dispersion nature of Lamb waves decreases signal resolution and increases the difficulty of signal processing.…”

“…The second application, wind turbine monitoring, a more prospective one, was selected because it is a promising application of GWs. 35,36,37 Moreover, the environmental impact of wind turbine has been widely studied, enabling straightforward comparison between costs and gains. The wind turbine under consideration is 2 MW and located onshore.…”

“…However, the dimension and complexity of WTB and limitation in applicability and accuracy of some methods make them unsuitable for on-site inspection of WTB [ 7 ]. Due to the availability of a wide range of transducers, high sensitivity to defects and the ability to travel a long distance, ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) testing is extensively used for the inspection of these type of structures [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. The Lamb wave comes under the specific category of UGW that can be further categorized into the two types: symmetric (S0, S1) and asymmetric (A0, A1) Lamb waves based on the product of frequency ( f ) of excitation and thickness ( d ) of the propagating medium.…”
