Guided elastic waves along a rod defect of a two-dimensional phononic crystal

Abstract: It was shown that elastic waves propagating out-of-plane in a two-dimensional phononic crystal can experience full-band-gaps for nonzero values of the wave-vector component parallel to the rods. By further inserting a rod defect, it is demonstrated that modes propagating along the rod defect can be localized within the band-gaps of the phononic crystal. Such waveguide modes are exhibited for a tungsten/epoxy composite containing an aluminum nitride rod as the rod defect. It is expected that guided modes of suc… Show more

“…This results in a periodic arrangement of supercells which contains the point defect. With this method it is possible to obtain the relation ω( k) for crystals with local defects and for instance one can explain the physics of wave guides 29,30 or filters. 31 In this Section, we apply the approximation of supercell to the EPWE.…”

“…For a given SC, an increase in the bandgaps can be obtained only by an increasing the ff. There are two main ways for varying the characteristics of full SC bandgaps [3,4]. First, p-1 by varying the acoustical properties of the scatterers [5][6][7] or, secondly, by developing new arrangements of scatterers with further crystalline symmetries.…”

“…These modes are localized because the defect is surrounded by complete crystal and they have evanescent behaviour inside the periodic system. The generation of N p vacancies (N p being much lower than the total number of scatterers of the structure N cyl ) in periodic systems introduces a rich amount of physics phenomena: from the localized modes in point defects [Sigalas97] to the splitting of localized frequencies in multi-point defects [Li05] or to the application for the generation of waveguides [Sigalas98] or high precision acoustic filters [Khelif03,Khelif04,Vasseur08].…”
