Guided Bone Regeneration of an Atrophic Maxilla Using Heterologous Cortical Lamina

Abstract: Alloplastic dental implants are currently the best way to replace lost teeth. In order to achieve good function and prognosis of dental implants, having bone and soft tissue to support them is necessary. When the amount of bone left is not enough to ensure the outcome of the implant, techniques such as shorts implants, zygomatic implants, or guided bone regeneration have been used. Even though autologous bone is mostly the “gold standard,” other biomaterials such as xenografts have led to the reduction of the … Show more

“…It can be fixated with pins or osteosynthesis screws [ 13 , 15 , 21 ], or directly sutured (the Fine model) to the surrounding tissues, with a triangular section non-traumatic needle [ 22 ]. These features are particularly helpful when it is necessary to maintain the graft volume in aesthetic areas, as well as in horizontal augmentation [ 15 , 23 , 24 ] of two wall defects, and for covering antrostomy in lateral access sinus augmentation procedures [ 21 , 25 , 26 ]. Lamina can also be used in regeneration procedures with the risk of exposure.…”

“…42 was selected for extraction as 43 had more periodontal support and removal of 42 would provide enough space to correct the malocclusion on the lower arch. Ridge preservation with bone graft (BioOss® from Geistlich®, Wolhusen, Switzerland) [6] and collagen membrane (Osteobiol® from Tecnoss®, Pianezza TO, Italy) [7] were planned to maintain the dimensions of the 42 area while the teeth were being moved.…”
