GuideCopter - A Precise Drone-Based Haptic Guidance Interface for Blind or Visually Impaired People

Locating and grasping objects is a critical task in people’s daily lives. For people with visual impairments, this task can be a daily struggle. The support of augmented reality frameworks in smartphones can overcome the limitations of current object detection applications designed for people with visual impairments. We present AIGuide, a self-contained smartphone application that leverages augmented reality technology to help users locate and pick up objects around them. We conducted a user study to investigate the effectiveness of AIGuide in a visual prosthetic for providing guidance; compare it to other assistive technology form factors; investigate the use of multimodal feedback, and provide feedback about the overall experience. We gathered performance data and participants’ reactions and analyzed videos to understand users’ interactions with the nonvisual smartphone user interface. Our results show that AIGuide is a promising technology to help people with visual impairments locate and acquire objects in their daily routine. The benefits of AIGuide may be enhanced with appropriate interaction design.

Este artículo presenta la base de datos abierta TRAM-FPV Racing, la cual ha sido generada a partir de un conjunto de vuelos indoor realizados con drones de carreras en la Universidad de Cranfield (UK), concretamente en el Flight Arena, uno de los campos de vuelo indoor más grandes del mundo con fines académicos y de investigación. La base de datos que se presenta, incorpora la información de posición y orientación en el espacio de cinco modelos de drones de carreras, empleando un sistema de medición óptico (OMS). Además, incluye las lecturas de los acelerómetros, giroscopios y ángulos de heading registrados por los sensores de las unidades inerciales (IMU). Estas bases de datos, frecuentemente, son empleadas para el desarrollo y el ajuste de los algoritmos de fusión sensorial que incorporan los drones para la estimación de su vector de estados actual. No obstante, su campo de aplicación es muy amplio, pudiendo ser empleadas, por ejemplo, para el desarrollo de los modelos matemáticos no lineales de los drones o para la generación de trayectorias.

Laser Sensing and Vision Sensing Smart Blind Cane: A Review

Laser sensing and vision sensing smart canes can improve the convenience of travel for the visually impaired, but for the present, most of the system functions of laser sensing and vision sensing smart canes are still defective. Guide equipment and smart blind canes are introduced and classified first, and the smart blind canes based on vision sensing, laser sensing and laser vision sensing are investigated, respectively, and the research status of laser vision sensing smart blind canes is sorted out. The advantages and disadvantages of various laser vision sensing smart blind canes are summarized, especially the research development of laser vision fusion as the core of new smart canes. The future development prospects of laser vision sensing smart blind cane are overviewed, to boost the development of laser vision sensing smart blind cane, to provide safe and efficient travel guarantee for the visually impaired.
