Abstract: If the spring light is so intense as to produce an abundance of algae, shield the window side of the tank with green cloth, green tinted cellophane, or transparent varnish. Among the Tibetan texts in the Sven Hedin Collection now preserved in the Ethnographical Museum (Folkens Museum), Stockholm, there are three documents which are considered to belong to the Old Tibetan period. Their photos were first published in Bailey (1973), together with comments on a few Khotanese-related words, the texts being numbered Hedin 1, 2 and 3. But since then, they have not been paid due attention. In May 1990, I was able to examine these three manuscripts by courtesy of the Folkens Museum and Professor Staffan Rosén, secretary of the Hedin Collection.On examination, I realized that all three texts are contracts, but of different kinds: that is, Hedin 1 is a sale contract, Hedin 2 a loan contract, and Hedin 3 a contract of hiring. Each exemplifies one of the three major types of Old Tibetan contract. Although different in kind, they show a close resemblance in both form and content: they are written on paper of similar size and quality. The left edge of each document is torn off in a similar way, but my attempts to join them together showed that they were not likely to have formed one piece. Paleographically, the three texts are written in similar styles, though apparently by different hands. They also have in common somenames of the persons concerned (cf. §IV). All these shared features clearly suggest that these three texts, even though they were not originally one, belong to the same period and location.

R. Hamilton is already known as a distinguished scholar on account of his book Les Ouighours d Vepoque des cinq dynasties d'apres lea documents chinois, Paris, 1955, and a number of articles, including one in BSOAS, xxxi, 2, 1968, 330-46, that arose from a study of the text edited in the book here under review. The present work is arranged as follows. The introduction (pp. 1-5) describes briefly the background to the edition of the text. Text of Pelliot MS Chinois 3509 (pp. 9-52) and text of 'Fragment A ' (= British Museum MS Or. 8212 (118)) (pp. 55-6), in each case with facing French translation. The text is presented in transliteration in capitals and in transcription interlinearly in small letters. Notes on the texts (pp. 59-96). The ' Glossaire' (pp. 97-138) is complete and presented in the form of a concordance, with both morphological and etymological explanations of the lexical items. Table of correspondences between the transliterations and the transcriptions (pp. 139-43). Some Turkish suffixes (pp. 146-50) discussed, in alphabetical order, with respect to morphological function and origin. Bibliography and list of abbreviations (pp. 151-9). Beautiful, large, clear facsimiles of all folios of both texts (pp. 163-204). The book is superbly and sumptuously produced. It is a pity therefore that the occasional Chinese characters have not been set in type. There are very few misprints: ' verward' on p. 67, 1. 19 for ' verwarf' could puzzle some readers. The first edition of P 3509 was made by C. Huart in JA, xi« Ser, m , jan.-fev. 1914, 5-57. Not satisfied by this edition, P. Pelliot rapidly prepared a new one, which appeared in TP, xv, 1914, 225-72, only months later. He acted ' pour ne pas laisser penetrer dans les etudes turques des formes que je crois inexactes'. No edition has been made since that of Pelliot until the present one by Hamilton. Because of the age of the text-it is probably to be assigned to a date shortly after the middle of the tenth century-it has often been cited by Turcologists, almost REVIEWS 693

The Stoics, according to Seneca and others, divided the whole of creation into two main principles: cause and matter. In a previous article I discussed some words meaning ‘matter’ in Armenian. The time seems ripe to deal with the other half of the universe, though perhaps not exhaustively. A linguistic analysis of the concept “cause” in Armenian involves a consideration of two roots, namely, IE *ai (IH *hei, *a4ei), and Iranian *5kar. Since these, especially the latter, are good examples, in the field of etymology, of the “polycephalous rhizomes” which perplexed an early Armenian translator of Gregory of Nyssa, they lead also to a consideration of words which seem to have very little to do with “cause”.
