Guidance-Aided Triple-Adaptive Frost Filter for Speckle Suppression in the Synthetic Aperture Radar Image

Abstract: Speckle noise exists inherently in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image. Its multiplicative property leads to lots of difficulties in SAR image processing. A novel guidance-aided triple-adaptive Frost filter is proposed in this paper, which has potential for real-time processing platforms. Firstly, a scale-adaptive sliding window sizing method is adopted to determine the neighborhood ranges for every point in the image. All the subsequent processing is based on it. Then, an adaptive calculation for the tun… Show more

“…In our previous work [18] , a fully size-adaptive sliding window method is proposed to obtain the accurate statistical characteristic for any SAR image application requiring statistics. And the outstanding performance of this method is verified in the SAR image edge detection and speckle suppression [19] . For detail, the size-adaptive sliding window needs to scan the image to be processed first.…”

“…To solve the problem of SAR image de-speckling, various algorithms are proposed. At present, the mainstream SAR image denoising methods can be divided into three categories: the first category is denoising using spatial domain filters, such as the Lee filter [1,2] and the Frost filter [3]. The second is to de-speckle with transform domain filtering methods, such as the wavelet soft thresholding method [10] and so on.…”

“…This kind of algorithm has a long development cycle, and many classic and mature algorithms have been proposed, such as the Lee filter [2], Kuan filter [3], Frost filter [4], total variation filter [5], the rolling guidance filter and other local statistical adaptations based on the least mean square error estimation method. In recent advancements, significant enhancements have been made to these filters, including the implementation of a sophisticated triple‐adaptive Frost filter [6]. This filter utilizes scale‐adaptive sliding windows to provide refined image processing capabilities.…”
